The Basics of President Card Game

President is a classic card game, also known as Scum, Asshole, or Kings, played with a standard 52-card deck. The objective is clear: get rid of all your cards as quickly as possible. The dynamic of ascending from a lower rank to becoming the President adds a competitive edge that makes this game a favorite among all ages. Let’s dive into the basic setup and rules.

Setup and Player Roles

  • Number of Players: Ideally 4-7, but can accommodate up to 10.
  • Cards: A standard 52-card deck. No Jokers.
  • Dealing: Cards are dealt clockwise, one at a time, until all cards are distributed.
  • Roles: Based on the previous round’s results – President, Vice-President, Neutral(s), Vice-Scum, and Scum.

Gameplay Rules

The essence of the game is in its turn-based play, where players discard cards in sequence, trying to be the first to get rid of all their cards. The hierarchy of card values from lowest to highest is 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, A, with 2 being a special card that resets the play.

  1. The President starts the game by playing any card or set of cards.
  2. Players follow in a clockwise direction, playing cards that match the pattern (single, pair, triple, etc.) but are higher in rank.
  3. If a player cannot or chooses not to play, they pass.
  4. A round ends when all players pass, or a 2 is played. The last player to play starts the new round.

Endgame and Ranking

The game concludes when only one player retains cards. Player roles are then reassigned based on the order of finishing – the first to empty their hand becomes the President for the next round, the second becomes the Vice-President, and so on, with the last player being designated as the Scum.
